Deleting cookies in IE6This page is an extension of the main TinHat cookie deletion page. I don't use IE6, and I'm obliged to TinHat reader Kevin Koffman who sent me useful information about his experiences of manually deleting cookies in this browser. The first thing to state is that there's an official Microsoft method of cookie deletion for IE6. You can find the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q278835. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to do a complete job (surprise!) and it leaves the folder C:\WINDOWS\Cookies still full of the nasty little creatures. If you decide to follow the instructions on the main TinHat cookie deletion page to delete these, watch out, because it appears that IE6 is more likely to foul up after manual deletions than the previous IE versions were. It's certainly worth rebooting your system after manual deletion and before you re-open IE6. This should reduce your chance of encountering a problem. If you experience more serious problems after manual deletions in IE6, you may have to resort to the Windows restore utility in ME and XP, or the Scanreg command in DOS for Windows98. Let me know about your own experiences, especially if they're bad ones. Email me (Andrew Starling) at astarling@xtinhat.com. You'll need to remove the x from my mail address - it's there to fool automatic address harvesters. Back to main TinHat cookie deletion page.
